LED lighting in Zoo
Durability and energy saving are important subjects for many zoos. In a Dutch zoo part of the lighting has been replaced by LED lighting. Almost 400 strip lights and halogen spots were replaced by durable LED lights.
The lights were not only replaced in public areas, but also in several animal enclosures. The new lighting should of course not spoil the atmosphere, but a LED lighting advisor was able to show that the new LED lights no longer emit cold light. The new lighting reduces energy consumption by 80%, which constitutes a huge reduction in CO2 emission. LED lighting also has a longer life span, thus saving even more money.
Not much is known yet about LED lighting in exotic animal enclosures. The animals’ behaviour and health will therefore be closely monitored over the next months.
