Wolves are particularly fond of meat, but a little bit of salmon, they won't reject. Researchers of the University of Victoria in Canada have discovered this by studying wolf droppings.
For four years, the researchers collected the droppings of wolves. This way, it was easy to determine what the animals had been eating. A large part of the year, they eat meat. For example deer. But in autumn, when the salmons appear in the rivers of Canada, the wolves adapt their diet and regularly catch salmon. The researchers also saw how their catching methods differ from that of bears. Bears use their claws, whereas wolves grab the salmon from the water with their mouths. Wolves also prefer the head of the salmon. Therefore, many decapitated fish are found in the woods.
