Zoos and Tourism

Zoos (and aquariums) are important and popular tourist attractions. Worldwide, most zoos are located in or near the larger cities. The zoos are visited along with all other important attractions.
Often, zoos find themselves in a dilemma. One the one hand, they want to attract many visitors and remain a major attraction; on the other hand, many zoos present themselves as essential nature conservation institutions. This book was written from the angle of tourism. Included are discussions on marketing, name recognition, and the measurement of visitor expectations and satisfaction. Theme parks and the value of zoo volunteer programmes are also explored. The tone is positive, showing that tourism can and must play a role in developing zoos in the direction of conservation. Within zoos, there must be a good balance between conservation, education and entertainment. Good zoos develop continuously and make use of modern and effective techniques to stimulate visitors.
